Michael Engel is a graduate of the University of Toronto (St. Michael’s College) and he received his law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1979.
After law school Michael articled for eminent counsel, Arthur Maloney, Q.C. and shortly thereafter secured employment with the Ministry of the Attorney General as an Assistant Crown Attorney at the Old City Hall in downtown Toronto, then the busiest courthouse in the country.
During his eight years as a Crown, Mr. Engel prosecuted every conceivable type of crime and was involved in many high-profile cases involving robberies, frauds, homicides and sexual assaults. He also argued numerous appeals as a prosecutor and conducted several coroner’s inquests.
In 1988 Mr. Engel went into private practice devoted exclusively to criminal defence work. In this capacity, over the past thirty years, he has defended all manner of charges and argued cases at every level of court in Ontario.
For the past two decades however, Mr. Engel has focused his practice exclusively to the defence of DUI cases.
In addition to a busy trial practice, Mr. Engel has argued many “summary conviction” appeals in various Superior Courts throughout the province. He has also successfully argued “indictable” appeals before the Ontario Court of Appeal as well as the Supreme Court of Canada.
